Solar panel servicing in Bairnsdale and East Gippsland
Two-yearly solar panel servicing in Bairnsdale: what a licensed electrician checks, why panel cleaning is not a service, and what to ask before you book.
A solar service in Bairnsdale is an electrical safety check of the panels, isolators, cabling, inverter and any battery, carried out by a licensed A Grade electrician who is employed by a Registered Electrical Contractor. Energy Safe Victoria says to have it done at least once every two years. Washing the glass is a different job and does not count as a service.

Why does a solar system need servicing?
Panels, cables and isolators sit on the roof through summer heat, winter frost, wind and rain. Plastic housings go brittle, seals shrink, and connectors work loose as the roof expands and contracts each day. Most of this wear cannot be seen from the ground, and a system can keep producing power while a fault develops inside an isolator box.
Age matters. The Be solar safe campaign, launched by Energy Safe and Solar Victoria on 29 September 2026, looked at Energy Safe’s fire records from July 2021 onwards. Systems that have been up for four years or more are only around a fifth of the state’s rooftop installations, but they turn up in nearly two in every three house fires linked to solar. The fires cluster in the hotter part of the year, which is why the regulator pushes spring bookings.
Around Bairnsdale, plenty of arrays went up a decade or more ago and have changed hands with the house since. A new owner often has no paperwork, no idea of the inverter’s age and no record of any past check. That is the household this service matters most for.
Which warning signs mean a service should not wait?
- Output has dropped compared with the same month last year, on your bill or in the inverter app.
- A burning or hot plastic smell near the inverter or the switchboard.
- Buzzing, crackling or clicking from the roof, an isolator or the inverter.
- A fault code or red light on the inverter display.
- Discoloured, cracked or swollen isolator covers.
- Nobody knows when the system was last checked, which is common when a house is bought with panels already on it.
If you smell burning or see smoke, stay clear of the equipment and call 000 if there is fire. A fault that is already showing is repair work rather than routine servicing; the solar repairs page covers that side.
What does a proper solar service include?
Energy Safe’s solar safety page lists what the electrician should cover. In plain terms:
| Item | What the electrician looks for |
|---|---|
| Panels and mounts | Deteriorated or corroded parts, loose clamps and fittings |
| Switches and isolators | Defects, water entry, heat damage |
| Cabling | Damage or deterioration, cables secured and not rubbing on the roof |
| Electrical tests | Each component operating as intended |
| Inverter | Faults recorded on the display or in its log |
| Access | Nothing blocking the isolator switches |
| Signage | Shutdown and isolation procedure clearly displayed |
| Debris | Panels, vents, inverter and battery free of leaf litter |
Ask for a short written report afterwards: what was tested, what was found, and any part that should be replaced. If the electrician repairs anything electrical, the 2026 campaign says you should receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety for that repair.
Is panel cleaning the same as a service?
No. Energy Safe warns that some operators in Victoria advertise solar servicing but are really a panel cleaning business. The September campaign added that cleaning alone is not an electrical safety check, and that cleaning done the wrong way can let water into components that have already deteriorated, raising the risk of a fault or fire.
| Panel clean | Electrical safety service | |
|---|---|---|
| Who can do it | Anyone | Licensed A Grade electrician employed by an REC |
| Checks isolators and wiring | No | Yes |
| Reads the inverter fault log | No | Yes |
| Runs electrical tests | No | Yes |
| Can fix electrical faults | No | Yes, with a Certificate of Electrical Safety |
Washing still has a place. Roofs near the water collect salty grime faster than roofs in town; the Lakes Entrance page deals with sea spray, and the Metung page deals with holiday homes left empty for weeks at a time. Book the electrical service first, then ask the electrician whether washing is worth doing on your roof.
Who is allowed to service solar in Victoria?
The electrician must hold an A Grade licence and work for a Registered Electrical Contractor. Both can be checked on the Energy Safe public registers. For extra assurance, Energy Safe suggests confirming the electrician is accredited by Solar Accreditation Australia, the scheme operator that accredits individual people for solar work. The solar quote checklist walks through each register search.
If the system went in under the Solar Homes Program, Energy Safe recommends contacting that retailer first, because program retailers and installers carry obligations on safety and product warranties.
How does a service visit usually run?
- The electrician reads the inverter display and fault history before anything is switched off.
- The system is shut down using the displayed procedure, which also proves the signage is right.
- If the roof is safe to access, the panels, mounts, cable runs and any rooftop isolators are inspected.
- Electrical tests are run at the inverter, the isolators and the switchboard.
- The system is restarted and output is compared with what the weather should produce.
- Findings are written up, with any repairs quoted separately so you can decide.
A double-storey house, a steep pitch or brittle old tiles can mean extra safety gear or a second person on site, which adds time and cost. If you already know the system is overdue, you can request a solar service quote now and add those roof details.
What does a solar service cost in Bairnsdale?
Why Solar’s 2026 repair cost guide puts a solar health check and fault diagnostic at $150 to $300 per visit. That is a national figure. Travel out to the lakes or the hill country, roof height and the number of panels all change a quote, and any repair found on the day is priced on top. The Bairnsdale solar and battery cost guide explains what else moves local prices.
What can you do between services?
- Keep wood piles, paint tins, fuel and other flammable liquids away from the inverter and battery. Energy Safe lists this as a basic safety step.
- Leave the area in front of the inverter and isolators clear so they can be reached quickly.
- Look at the inverter display or app once a month and write down any fault code.
- Trim branches that drop leaves onto the array.
- Stay off the roof and do not hose a hot array yourself.
Keep the paperwork from each visit in one folder with the original installation documents and any Certificates of Electrical Safety. When the house is sold, or a battery is added later, the next electrician can see what was found last time and whether a part was already flagged as wearing.
Next step
Send a solar service enquiry with your suburb, the year the panels went in if you know it, the inverter brand and model from its side label, the number of storeys and the roof material, whether a battery is fitted, and a photo of any fault code on the screen. The enquiry goes to an independent local electrician, who quotes and carries out the service in its own name; the about page explains how the referral works.
Frequently asked questions
- How often should rooftop solar be serviced in Victoria?
Energy Safe Victoria advises a service at least once every two years. An older system, a home near salt water, or a system showing a fault code may justify a shorter gap, which the electrician can advise on after the first visit.
- Can a panel cleaning company service my solar system?
Only if the person doing the work is a licensed A Grade electrician employed by a Registered Electrical Contractor. A business that only washes glass is not checking isolators, cabling or the inverter, and Energy Safe has warned Victorians about operators that sell cleaning as servicing.
- Do I need to be home for a solar service in Bairnsdale?
Usually someone needs to provide access to the inverter, the switchboard and a safe spot to put a ladder. Ask the provider beforehand whether the power will be off during testing, so you can plan around the fridge, the computer and any medical devices.
- My system was installed under Solar Homes. Who do I call for a service?
Energy Safe recommends going back to the original Solar Homes retailer first, since program retailers and installers carry safety and warranty obligations. If that retailer has closed or cannot help, another licensed electrician can still carry out the service.
- Will a service fix a drop in solar output?
A service can find common causes such as a tripped isolator, a failed connector or an inverter fault, and it records what was found. The fix itself is quoted as a repair once the cause is known, and you decide whether to go ahead.
