Solar battery backup power in Bairnsdale
Keep lights, the fridge and the modem running in a Bairnsdale blackout. How battery backup works, which systems can island and what to ask before buying.
A solar battery only keeps a Bairnsdale home running in a blackout if the system was designed and wired for backup. Standard grid-connected solar, with or without a battery, switches off when the grid fails. A multimode or hybrid system with backup circuits can separate the house from the grid and run lights, the fridge and the modem from stored energy.

Why do standard solar systems go dark in a blackout?
Solar Victoria explains on its backup power page that a standard system shuts down during an outage to protect the home from power surges and to protect people working on nearby lines. Panels in full sun then give the house nothing. Plenty of owners only learn this during their first outage after the battery goes in.
A system that keeps working is said to be islanding: it cuts itself off from the grid and feeds the home only, never the street. That needs a suitable inverter, a switching device, and wiring that splits the backed-up circuits from everything else.
Why does backup matter in East Gippsland?
Solar Victoria’s power outages page says outages in Victoria are rare, and lists severe weather, trees falling on lines, car accidents and technical faults among the causes. East Gippsland has seen the long kind. The AIDR record of the 2019 to 2020 fires describes power and mobile phone outages north of Ensay after 20 December 2019, and the Princes Highway east of Bairnsdale closed in several places by 1 January 2020, isolating many communities. Mallacoota was not reconnected to the main grid until 8 February.
A battery does not make a house safe in a fire and is no reason to stay when told to leave. What it can do is keep the fridge cold, a few lights on, phones charged and the modem working through a storm outage or the days after an event, so warnings still reach you. The Bruthen area page covers fire-season planning for homes in the hills north of town.
What can a backup battery run?
That depends on the battery’s capacity, the inverter’s output limit, and which circuits are wired to backup. Solar Victoria notes that some multimode inverters run continuously in standalone mode while others back up only one or two priority circuits, such as the fridge and lights.
| Setup | What usually keeps running | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| One essential circuit | Fridge, a few lights, modem, phone charging | Lowest cost; the rest of the house is off |
| Several priority circuits | Kitchen power, lights, water pump, one bedroom | Switchboard work to separate circuits |
| Whole-home backup | Most circuits, within the inverter’s limit | Big loads may still need to be run one at a time |
| Grid battery with no backup | Nothing during an outage | Cheapest battery setup; stores solar for evenings only |
Heavy loads such as an electric oven, ducted heating, a storage hot water element or a car charger can flatten a battery within hours or trip the inverter on start-up, so many owners leave them off the backup side. Write down the appliances you cannot do without before you ask for a backup battery quote; it makes the design conversation much shorter.
How long will the stored power last?
Solar Victoria names the factors: the size of the solar system, how much electricity the household uses during the outage, and the draw of each appliance kept running. A careful provider will ask for a bill or your usage data and work out what a full battery covers overnight. Ask directly whether your design lets the panels recharge the battery while the grid is down, because that decides whether backup lasts one night or keeps going through a run of sunny days.
What about medical equipment?
If anyone in the home relies on powered medical equipment, get specialist advice before buying. Solar Victoria says home battery systems are typically not suitable as the primary supply for that kind of load. Keep a separate plan with the equipment supplier rather than relying on the battery.
Does a VPP battery give backup?
Not dependably. Solar Victoria says batteries in a virtual power plant are designed around market participation; some can run during an outage, but they are not set up for that purpose. If you are offered a VPP deal, ask how much charge the operator leaves in reserve and whether backup still works with the VPP settings switched on. The solar only or solar and battery comparison looks at whether a battery suits your household at all.
What does a careful provider check before quoting backup?
- Whether the existing inverter can island, or a hybrid inverter or backup gateway is needed.
- Which circuits you want kept on, followed by a look at the switchboard to see if they can be separated.
- Where the battery will sit. Solar Victoria’s battery buyers guide says to avoid direct sun and uninsulated, unshaded metal sheds, notes batteries cannot go in habitable rooms under AS/NZS 5139, and asks for a vermin-proof enclosure out of children’s reach with safety and shutdown signs.
- How quickly the system changes over when the grid drops, and whether computers or clocks may reset.
- Clear labels at the switchboard showing which circuits stay live in an outage.
How is backup added to a home?
- The provider reviews switchboard photos, a recent bill and your list of must-run appliances.
- AusNet pre-approval is sought for the battery and inverter before anything is installed.
- The battery and a hybrid inverter or backup gateway are fitted, and the chosen circuits are moved to their own section of the switchboard.
- The system is tested, including a deliberate grid disconnection to prove the backup side stays on.
- Battery systems are prescribed electrical work in Victoria, so an independent Licensed Electrical Inspector checks the job before it is left running and you receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety.
- The installer shows you how to read the display during an outage and which outlets and lights stay powered.
Ask for a printed one-page outage guide to keep near the switchboard. In the dark, with the phone network down, nobody wants to search an app for instructions.
How much does a backup battery cost?
The Solar Choice battery price index for August 2026, which includes installation, GST and the federal battery discount, puts a 10 kWh usable battery at $7,784 to $8,284 per system and a 20 kWh battery at $14,972 to $15,772 per system. Those are national averages and leave out difficult installs. Backup wiring, a gateway, splitting circuits or a switchboard upgrade add to the price, and so can travel to rural East Gippsland. Battery sizing and the discount rules are explained on the home battery installation page.
Is a generator a better choice?
Solar Victoria’s power outages page lists gas, diesel and LPG generators as another backup option. They come in a range of sizes, but they carry an upfront cost and ongoing fuel costs and they produce greenhouse gas emissions. A generator also needs a safe outdoor spot and its fuel stored away from the house. Some rural households keep a small generator as well as a battery. Next step
Send a battery backup enquiry with your suburb, a photo of the switchboard, the inverter label if solar is already on the roof, the list of appliances you need during an outage, how long your longest recent blackout lasted, and whether anyone uses powered medical equipment. An independent local provider reviews it, works out a design and gives you its own quote.
Frequently asked questions
- Will my existing solar battery work during a blackout?
Only if it was set up with backup. Check the installer's paperwork for words such as backup, EPS or islanding, look for a separate backup section in the switchboard, or ask a licensed electrician to confirm. Many batteries installed purely to store daytime solar shut down along with the grid.
- Can a backup battery run ducted heating or an electric oven?
Sometimes, but large loads drain storage quickly and can exceed what the inverter supplies at once. Most backup designs leave those appliances off the protected circuits, or allow them only one at a time, so the essentials keep running longer.
- How quickly does a backup system switch over when the power drops?
It varies by inverter and gateway. Some changeovers are fast enough that lights barely flicker, while others take a few seconds, which can restart computers and clocks. Ask the provider to state the changeover behaviour of the exact equipment quoted.
- Is backup safe for people working on the power lines?
A correctly installed islanding system disconnects from the grid before it powers the house, which is why it can run during an outage without sending power down the street. That separation is part of the design the licensed installer certifies.
- Can I add backup to a battery that does not have it?
Some batteries and inverters can be upgraded with a backup gateway and switchboard changes, and some cannot. Send photos of the battery, inverter and switchboard labels so a provider can tell you which applies before quoting.
