Solar for Lindenow farmhouses and sheds
Lindenow VIC 3865 solar: farmhouse and packing-shed roofs, pumps, SWER supply limits and keeping inverters and batteries above flood level on the river flats.
Most Lindenow solar enquiries come from farmhouses and working sheds on or near the Mitchell River flats. The jobs are usually larger than in town, often involve pumps or cool rooms, and need the inverter and any battery mounted well above flood level. The rural supply type also matters: a property on a single wire earth return line has a lower export limit. This site refers enquiries only; an independent electrical and solar business assesses the farm, prices it and does the install.
Lindenow is on the Bairnsdale to Dargo Road, about 20 km west of Bairnsdale (Wikipedia, Lindenow, Victoria). The river flats grow vegetables that are shipped around Australia, and the Mitchell River National Park is nearby. The population was 449 at the 2016 census. Lindenow is postcode 3865, while Lindenow South uses 3875. Both sit in East Gippsland Shire.
What is different about solar on a Lindenow farm?
Farm loads and town loads are not the same. A packing shed, cool room, irrigation pump or workshop draws power during the day, which suits solar well, but each one needs looking at on its own.
| Load or building | What a provider will look at |
|---|---|
| Farmhouse | Roof condition, evening use, whether the house and sheds share one meter |
| Packing shed or cool room | Daytime demand, shed roof structure, three phase supply |
| Irrigation or stock pump | Running hours, distance from the meter, whether it is on its own supply |
| Workshop | Welder and compressor loads, sub-board size |
| Separate dwelling on the farm | Whether it is on the same supply or has its own |
Telling the provider which loads run in daylight, and for roughly how many hours in a typical week of the growing season, lets it match the array to real use rather than to a guess. Large shed and business systems are covered on the farm and business solar page. For a pump far from any power line, a stand-alone setup is a different job again. The Clean Energy Regulator says an off-grid battery only earns certificates for a lived-in dwelling, so sheds and bore pumps are excluded from that discount.
What does SWER supply mean for export?
Many rural Gippsland properties are fed by a single wire earth return line. AusNet Services’ pre-approval for systems up to 30 kW allows 3.5 kW of export on a SWER line, compared with 5 kW per phase on a standard single phase supply (AusNet, solar up to 30 kW). That does not stop you fitting more panels. It means more of the output should be used on site, by shifting pumping, refrigeration or water heating into the day, or stored in a battery. The wider export rules and how to ask for a manual assessment are on the AusNet export limits page.
If you are not sure which supply the farm has, the provider can confirm it when it lodges the network application. A photo of the pole and overhead line that feeds the house, sent with your Lindenow farm enquiry, gives the provider something to check against the network records before it sizes the system around a likely export limit.
How do you keep solar gear above the flood line?
The June 2007 Gippsland flood came from record rain in an intense low that followed the Great Divide fires, and seven rivers broke their banks (AIDR, Gippsland flood 2007). On the river flats, the safe place for equipment is decided by the highest water the property has seen, not the average year.
A careful provider will:
- Ask how high water has come at the house and sheds, and look for flood marks.
- Mount the inverter, isolators and any battery above that level, on a wall or frame, never on the floor of a low shed.
- Keep cable entries on the top or sides of enclosures, so water cannot run in.
- Avoid battery placement in an uninsulated metal shed in direct sun, as Solar Victoria advises, which often means a shaded house wall instead.
- Label the shutdown procedure clearly, so someone returning after a flood knows how to isolate the system before touching anything.
If floodwater has reached any part of a system, leave it off and have a licensed electrician check it before anyone turns it back on.
What should a farm solar quote show?
- The supply type (single phase, three phase or SWER) and the pre-approved export limit.
- Which roofs carry panels, and the cable route and trenching between buildings.
- The inverter and battery location and the height above ground.
- Panel, inverter and battery models, and their places on the approved lists.
- Who is the accredited designer and installer.
- The independent inspection and Certificate of Electrical Safety.
What does a larger Lindenow system cost?
Solar Choice’s October 2026 Melbourne figures put a fully installed 10 kW system at about $8,920 to $10,410 per system, from a standard to a premium offer. That is a city average. Long cable runs, trenching, shed roof repairs, three phase equipment and travel from Bairnsdale will push a farm quote higher. Backup for a cool room or pump during an outage is a separate design question, covered on the battery backup power page. For conditions closer to town, see the Bairnsdale area page.
Next step for a Lindenow property
List the buildings you want powered, the big loads such as pumps or cool rooms, and whether the farm is single phase, three phase or on a single overhead wire. Note the highest flood level the property has seen. Add photos of the meter, the main switchboard and the shed roof. Then send your Lindenow farm solar details so a provider can work out the export limit before quoting.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I put solar on a Lindenow packing shed and use it for the house?
Yes, if both buildings are on the same meter and the cable between them can carry the output. If the shed has its own meter, it is treated as a separate connection with its own application. The provider will work out which applies from your bills and the meter numbers.
- Is Lindenow South treated differently from Lindenow for solar?
Only in its postcode, which is 3875 rather than 3865. Both are in East Gippsland Shire and both are supplied by AusNet Services. What matters for a solar job is your own supply type, roof and loads, not which side of the postcode line you are on.
- Can solar run an irrigation pump directly on a Lindenow farm?
A grid-connected system reduces what the pump costs when it runs in daylight. A pump far from any line may suit a stand-alone solar pumping setup, which is a different design. Give the pump's power rating, running hours and distance from the meter so the provider can suggest an approach.
- What happens to my Lindenow solar system if the river floods?
The grid-connected system will shut down when power is lost. Once water recedes, leave everything off and have a licensed electrician inspect the inverter, isolators, cabling and any battery before it is turned back on. Photograph flood marks and damage for your insurer.
